"The Everlasting" is the second single to be lifted from the Manic Street Preachers's fifth studio album This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours.
It was released on November 30, 1998, through Epic, it peaked on number 11 on the UK Singles Chart, breaking their run of consecutive top-ten hits. All three members of the band—James Dean Bradfield, Sean Moore and Nicky Wire—share the writing credits.

This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours is the fifth studio album by Welsh alternative rock band Manic Street Preachers. It was released on 14 September 1998 by record label Epic.
Like its 1996 predecessor Everything Must Go, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours was a commercial and critical success. The album debuted at number 1 in the UK Albums Chart, selling 136,000 copies, going Gold in the first week.
It sold well in the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia, and represented a change in the sound from the furious alternative rock sound to a more melodic and tender approach. By March 1999 the album was Triple Platinum in the UK alone and since its release it has sold more than five million copies worldwide.
It earned the band further nominations and accolades at the BRIT Awards in 1999. This is their first album which the lyrics were solely written by the bassist Nicky Wire, as their previous album which some of the songs still contributed from the late rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards.

Assursero alla fama nel Regno Unito alla fine degli anni novanta. Anche se nella prima parte della loro carriera erano considerati un gruppo punk rock, la loro musica è ora spesso vista come rock alternativo, in seguito a dei cambiamenti.
Sono conosciuti soprattutto per le loro azioni folli degli inizi, la misteriosa scomparsa (probabile suicidio) di Richey James Edwards (che preferiva essere conosciuto come Richey James), come per una serie di album fortemente iconoclasti e per i loro concerti.
Politicamente i Manic Street Preachers sono socialisti, una posizione influenzata dalla loro educazione (sono cresciuti durante lo sciopero dei minatori degli anni ottanta) come mostrato dai loro testi e dalle loro azioni spesso molto politicizzate: una volta hanno dedicato un premio a Arthur Scargill, leader del National Union of Mineworkers e in seguito del Socialist Labour Party.
