Song

"Woman" is a song by English rock band Mumford & Sons. It was released as the third single from their fourth studio album, Delta, on 10 May 2019. The song was written by Marcus Mumford, Winston Marshall, Ben Lovett and Ted Dwane.

Composition

Mumford & Sons started writing music for their fourth album Delta several years before it was released. While the other members were in Brooklyn, guitarist and banjoist Winston Marshall began work on some of the songs on the album in Nashville, where his then-girlfriend Dianna Agron was filming a movie and they became engaged.

Marshall had been encouraged by sound engineer Garrett Miller to try more synthesized music, and composed the first verse and the falsetto hook of "Woman" in Nashville. When he took it back to the other members, pianist Ben Lovett described first hearing the song by saying: "[it] just felt like something that was very, very different, but also felt really good.

Maybe that was a moment that we felt unshackled by anything that we had done previously." Marshall said that the song took a long time to finish, and "really came together" when Paul Epworth, the album's producer, got involved.

Marshall said that despite the song title, "Woman" is about the love shared by the couple. It is an indie R&B song, and was influenced by Jai Paul. Rolling Stone felt that it sounds like Khalid songs. The song uses banjo, but it is disguised. Marshall used a five-string cello banjo, and there are three banjo tracks layered. The banjo is also pitched down an octave, more like a synth track.

Videos

A lyric video for "Woman" was released on 3 December 2018, with videography from National Geographic featuring a woodland full of butterflies and elephants roaming the savanna, as part of the "Mumford & Sons + National Geographic Present Delta" series. It had originally been shown on 15 November 2018 at a screening release of the visual album.

A music video to accompany the release of the single was first published on YouTube on 4 June 2019. Music video was filmed in New York, directed by James Marcus Haney and choreographed by Kristin Sudeikis. The video stars Forward Space company dancers Yeman Brown and Stephanie Crousillat as a couple dancing together, around a studio and in front of the New York skyline, captured on a handheld camcorder.

The video came about after Marshall watched Brown perform an improvised dance routine to Beyoncé's "Halo" at Forward Space, having been introduced by Agron. Marshall said: "My heart went into my throat and I was quite literally moved to tears. It stole my breath away. I didn't know dance could make you feel that way."

The cover art is in grayscale and depicts a forearm with the word "cass" tattooed in a handwritten font.

Album

Delta è il quarto album in studio della band britannica Mumford & Sons, pubblicato il 16 novembre 2018 tramite le etichette Gentlemen of the Road e Island Records. L'album è stato registrato presso The Church Studios di Londra con il produttore Paul Epworth.

Il primo singolo tratto dall'album è Guiding Light, presentato il 20 settembre 2018 in anteprima su BBC Radio 1, in contemporanea con la pubblicazione del video musicale su YouTube. Il gruppo ha iniziato la promozione dell'album a novembre 2018, con un tour mondiale di 60 date, annunciato il 4 ottobre, via social.^[5] Il secondo singolo tratto dall'album è If I Say.

Delta è stato definito un album che "attinge all'esperienza condivisa di essere dentro e fuori da un tour, e distinto dall'album "più inneggiante", precedente della band, Wilder Mind (2015), in quanto è più "tenero", "introspettivo e riflessivo".

Incorporerà elementi di elettronica, rap e jazz, contenente ancora "l'intimità e il godimento" per cui la band è conosciuta, ma il tastierista Ben Lovett ha affermato che tratta anche delle cosiddette "quattro D" (in inglese: death, divorce, drugs, depression) morte, divorzio, droga e depressione. Marcus Mumford ha parlato con Annie Mac, di BBC Radio, del riutilizzo di strumenti folk che non hanno usato in Wilder Mind, dichiarando:

"[siamo]  consapevoli [su]  come possiamo far suonare questi strumenti, non come questi strumenti abbiano aperto a noi un mondo completamente nuovo".

"Delta rimane ancora il loro miglior album, dal conforto spirituale avvolto in inni profani".

Delta è un buon album, ma non grandioso.

"Questo tipo di produzione ben curata, abbinata a una serie di canzoni incentrate su viaggi interiori, ha in definitiva un effetto cullante. C'è un impulso, ma è morbido e diventa elettronico. C'è emozione, ma è stata intenzionalmente racchiusa in un bozzolo digitale, uno che appiattisce gli accenti audaci del gruppo (come un abbraccio di vocoder) e trasforma Delta in una musica di sottofondo morbida e luccicante, ideale per qualsiasi ambiente rilassante che si desideri".

I Mumford & Sons sono un gruppo musicale indie folk formatosi nel 2007 a Londra, composto da Marcus Mumford (voce, chitarra, batteria), Ben Lovett (voce, tastiere, pianoforte, fisarmonica) Winston Marshall (voce, chitarra, banjo, basso) e Ted Dwane (voce, basso, contrabasso, batteria).

Stile musicale e influenze

Mumford & Sons sono stati descritti dal The Hollywood Reporter e Forbes come un gruppo folk rock. Hanno iniziato utilizzando strumentazione di tipo bluegrass e folk, con gli strumenti di base di chitarra acustica, banjo, pianoforte e un contrabbasso, suonato con uno stile ritmico riconducibile a rock alternativo e folk.

Nel documentario Big Easy Express, Marcus Mumford riconosce l'influenza degli Old Crow Medicine Show :

"Ho sentito la musica degli Old Crow quando avevo, più o meno, 16 o 17 anni e davvero mi ha spinto, verso la musica folk, e il bluegrass. Ho ascoltato Bob Dylan, ma non mi sono davvero avventurato nel mondo del country così tanto."

Mumford riconosce che "la band li ha ispirati a prendere il banjo e iniziare le loro ormai famose serate country a Londra." Ketch Secor, il frontman degli Old Crow, concorda: "Quei ragazzi hanno colto il messaggio e ci hanno fatto carriera."

Emmylou Harris è stata "tra gli artisti che hanno aiutato Mumford e i compagni di band Ben Lovett, Ted Dwane e Winston Marshall a scoprire il loro amore per la musica roots americana, iniziando con "O Brother, Where Art You?" la famosa colonna sonora (...) che alla fine li ha portati a conoscere gli Old Crow Medicine Show e poi ad immergersi profondamente nei suoni d'altri tempi, dal passato a lungo trascurato dell'America."
