Fleet Foxes - Mykonos

Song

Mykonos is the third single from indie folk band Fleet Foxes, from their 2008 EP Sun Giant. It was released in the UK on January 27, 2009, by European label Bella Union; in the format of 7" vinyl as well as a digital download, and peaked at number 51 on the UK Singles Chart. The B-side is a live version of "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song" from their debut album.

On May 5, 2009, it was released in the U.S. on Seattle-based record label Sub Pop, with the song "False Knight On the Road" in place of "Tiger Mountain Peasant Song". An alternate version of the song, with a track length of 3:39, was released on the deluxe version of their debut album Fleet Foxes.

Music video

A music video was made for "Mykonos", and was directed by Sean Pecknold, singer Robin Pecknold's brother. It is entirely animated and is described by Pitchfork.tv as:

"[The] ... video imagines a fluid universe filled with triangles, castles and barbershop mustaches. It's a little playful... and a little creepy."

It depicts a pair of small origami triangles (representing feet) on an adventure through a world made solely of paper. They begin, sliding and falling downwards, onto various objects and buildings which collapse shortly after. As this happens, an evil face appears in the background, whose eyes follow the triangles. Eventually, the triangles find a bird, upon whose back they ride above the clouds, only to fall again and end up in a dark forest filled with long, thin legs walking around.

They then enter a flying machine, and encounter a tall figure, which they push over a cliff, to fall with it, watched by rows of eyes. As the song slows, they continue to fall, into a fortress in which the figures walk along high walkways. It appears to be the home of the face, which is promptly destroyed by the triangles, who flee the collapsing fortress. The song fades as the triangles sink into the sea.

Album

Sun Giant is the second extended play (EP) by American indie folk band Fleet Foxes, released on April 8, 2008, on Bella Union and Sub Pop. While the EP was released prior to their debut album, Fleet FoxesSun Giant was recorded after the LP. Sun Giant was originally intended to be a tour only release, but demand from fans led to its official release.

Fleet Foxes had stated that Sun Giant was pressed so that they had something to sell on tour, and clarified that the music was not indicative of their ambitions. The EP was named the #1 album of the year by Pitchfork in conjunction with their debut LP.

Lyrics

Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

The door slammed loud and rose up a cloud of dust on us
Footsteps follow, down through the hollow sound, torn up

And you will go to Mykonos
With a vision of a gentle coast
And a sun to maybe dissipate
Shadows of the mess you made

Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

Pallid animals in the snow-tipped pines I find
Hatching from the seed of your thin mind all night

And you will go to Mykonos
With a vision of a gentle coast
And a sun to maybe dissipate
Shadows of the mess you made

Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Brother, you don't need to turn me away
I was waiting down at the ancient gate

You go
Wherever you go today
You go today

I remember how they took you down
As the winter turned the meadow brown

You go
Wherever you go today
You go today

When out walking, brother, don't you forget
It ain't often that you'll ever find a friend
You go

Wherever you go today
You go today
You go

Testo

Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

La porta sbatté forte e si sollevò su di noi una nuvola di polvere
Seguono i passi, giù attraverso il suono vuoto, lacerati

E tu andrai a Mykonos
Con una visione di una costa dolce
E un sole forse da dissipare
Ombre del casino che hai fatto

Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh

Trovo pallidi animali tra i pini con la neve
Cova dal seme della tua mente magra per tutta la notte

E tu andrai a Mykonos
Con una visione di una costa dolce
E un sole forse da dissipare
Ombre del casino che hai fatto

Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Whoa-oh-oh, oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh, oh-oh-oh
Oh-oh-oh-oh-oh

Fratello, non devi allontanarmi
Stavo aspettando all'antica porta

vai
Ovunque tu vada oggi
Vai oggi

Ricordo come ti hanno abbattuto
Mentre l'inverno diventava marrone il prato

vai
Ovunque tu vada oggi
Vai oggi

Quando cammini fuori, fratello, non dimenticare
Non capita spesso di trovare un amico
vai

Ovunque tu vada oggi
Vai oggi
vai
