The Cinematic Orchestra Feat. Patrick Watson - To Build A Home

Song

"To Build a Home" is a song by English electronic music group The Cinematic Orchestra, with vocals and piano performed by Canadian singer-songwriter Patrick Watson. It was released as the second single from the group's third studio album, Ma Fleur (2007), on 29 October 2007.

In 2015, the song peaked at number 96 on the French Singles Chart.

Composition

"To Build a Home" is a piano ballad that serves as the opening track to its companion album, Ma Fleur, though it serves as the closing track on the Domino-released versions of the album. It features vocals from Canadian singer-songwriter Patrick Watson, who also has writing credits on the song alongside Phil France and Jason Swinscoe of the Cinematic Orchestra.

Watson also performed piano for the song. The instrumental begins with about three to four piano chords looped, building up to a more loud and grand point, introducing strings. During this portion of the instrumental, Watson sings over both the piano and strings, eventually climaxing with falsetto vocals.

Lyrically, the song deals with Watson wanting to create a house for him and his lover. What happens with the house is unknown, resulting it to be merely metaphorical in place of a resting place for the two.

Album

Ma Fleur (my flower, in French) is the fourth full-length release and third proper studio album by The Cinematic Orchestra, released on 7 May 2007. The North American version of the album contains 10 tracks in a different sequence from the UK version and omits "Child Song".

The song "To Build a Home" was used in an award-winning 2008 Schweppes Lemonade advertisement called "Burst" and in the 2010 Australian-French film The Tree, and the similar shorter song "That Home" in the trailer for 2011 film Another Earth.

Artist

The Cinematic Orchestra is a British nu jazz and electronic music group, created in 1999 by Jason Swinscoe. The group is signed to independent record labelNinja Tune. In addition to Swinscoe, the band includes former DJ Food member PC (Patrick Carpenter) on turntables, Luke Flowers (drums), Tom Chant (saxophone), Nick Ramm (piano), Stuart McCallum (guitar) and Phil France (double bass).

Former members include Jamie Coleman (trumpet), T. Daniel Howard (drums), Federico Ughi (drums), Alex James (piano), and Clean Sadness (synthesizer, programming). The most recent addition to the band is Mancunian guitarist Stuart McCallum. Swinscoe and Carpenter have also recorded together under the band name Neptune.

Style

The Cinematic Orchestra's sound, in both live and studio contexts, employs a live band which improvises along with a turntablist and electronic elements such as samples provided by Swinscoe. In their studio releases Swinscoe will often remix the live source material to produce a combination of live jazz improvisation with electronica, such that it is difficult to tell where the improvisation ends and the production begins.

Lyrics

There is a house built out of stone
Wooden floors, walls and window sills
Tables and chairs worn by all of the dust
This is a place where I don't feel alone
This is a place where I feel at home

And I built a home
For you
For me
Until it disappeared
From me
From you
And now, it's time to leave and turn to dust

Out in the garden where we planted the seeds
There is a tree as old as me
Branches were sewn by the colour of green
Ground had arose and passed its knees
By the cracks of the skin I climbed to the top
I climbed the tree to see the world
When the gust came around to blow me down
Held on as tightly as you held onto me
Held on as tightly as you held onto me

And I built a home
For you
For me
Until it disappeared
From me
From you
And now, it's time to leave and turn to dust

Testo

per me
finché non sparì
da me

fuori in giardino dove avevamo piantato i semi
c'è un albero vecchio come me
i rametti erano intrecciati su uno sfondo verde
ti ho stretta forte tanto quanto tu hai stretto me
ti ho stretta forte tanto quanto tu hai stretto me

e ho costruito una casa
per te
per me
finché non sparì
da me
