Song

"Fade into You" is a song by American alternative rock band Mazzy Star from their second studio album, So Tonight That I Might See (1993).

The song was written by lyricist Hope Sandoval and composer David Roback, who also served as producer. The song reached number three on the US Billboard Modern Rock Tracks chart in 1994 and is Mazzy Star's only single to appear on the Billboard Hot 100, peaking at number 44. The song also charted at number 48 on the UK Singles Chart and number three in Iceland.

In 2021, Rolling Stone ranked "Fade into You" at number 468 on its list of "The 500 Greatest Songs of All Time". Pitchfork included the song at number 19 on their list of the "Top 200 Tracks of the 90s". Australian alternative music radio station Triple J ranked the song the 32nd greatest of 1994.

Music videos

Two music videos were made for "Fade into You". The first was directed by Kevin Kerslake and premiered on MTV in late October 1993, several weeks after the album's release. The video features the band performing in front of a projection screen depicting white clouds in a black sky, and is interlaced with slow-motion footage of the band in various locales in the Mojave Desert. Portions of this video were filmed at the same location U2 shot the artwork for The Joshua Tree.

The second music video was directed by Merlyn Rosenberg and first aired in February 1994. Known as the Black and White version for its monochromic content throughout, the intentionally grainy, distorted footage shows the band performing in a darkened Burlesque-era ballroom, and is interspersed with footage of Sandoval and Roback at various sites around San Francisco, including the All Seasons Hotel (now the Crescent Hotel) and neighboring Stockton Street tunnel, coupled with genuine footage of the same sites shot in the 1930s. Only the latter music video was broadcast internationally.

Il significato di Fade Into You

L’interpretazione più comune è che “Fade Into You” parli di avere una malsana ossessione per qualcuno che è in qualche modo danneggiato e non capace di vero affetto. È una canzone agrodolce, perché naturalmente un tale affetto non può che finire in crepacuore e delusione. La voce inquietante di Hope Sandoval aggiunge tanto, se non di più, umore alla canzone quanto il testo.

Canta del tentativo di trovare una connessione con questo partner, ma presto si rende conto che non sono in grado di formare una vera connessione emotiva e fisica. Questa realizzazione è deludente e straziante e la sua voce ansimante ed eterea trasmette perfettamente quei sentimenti.

Album

So Tonight That I Might See è il secondo album dei Mazzy Star, pubblicato nel 1993 dalla Capitol Records. La prima traccia dell'album, Fade Into You, è stata l'unico singolo della band ad entrare nella classifica Billboard Hot 100, piazzandosi al 44º posto. La canzone è entrata anche nella UK chart al 48º posto.

Questo disco presenta un limitato cambiamento nel suono dall'album precedente She Hangs Brightly; le tracce sono un po' più sviluppate e leggermente meno decise. Fade Into You divenne un'espressione, nella metà degli anni novanta, dei drammi giovanili e rappresentò una sorta di noia delicata che mancava all'aggressiva rabbia del grunge.

Continuando con il tema generale della quiete, di canzoni contemplative, l'album diventò argomento di conversazione nelle stazioni radio dei college. La traccia Into Dust è stata usata nel trailer "Dust to Dust" per il videogioco Gears of War 3 nel 2010.

Storia

Nel 1987 a Pasadena, durante un tour degli Opal con i The Jesus and Mary Chain, la bassista e cantante Kendra Smith decide di far perdere le proprie tracce. Il chitarrista David Roback (già nei Rain Parade col fratello Steven) chiama a sostituirla una giovane cantautrice di cui aveva prodotto il disco d'esordio, Hope Sandoval. Al ritorno della Smith, Roback decide di lasciare gli Opal e di formare, con la Sandoval, un nuovo gruppo: i Mazzy Star. I due musicisti si suddividono i compiti, lei scrive i testi mentre Roback la musica.
