Manic Street Preachers - You Stole The Sun From My Heart

Song

"You Stole the Sun from My Heart" is a song by Welsh rock band Manic Street Preachers, released as the third single from their fifth studio album, This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours (1998), on 8 March 1999.

All three members of the band—James Dean BradfieldSean Moore, and Nicky Wire—share the writing credits. The song reached number five on the UK Singles Chart and number two in Iceland.

Background and content

Wire has described the music as a mix of New Order and Nirvana: "something you might be able to go along with if you really do the audio equivalent of squinting – and explained that the drum loop (yes, more drum machines) was sampled by Moore from the sound of a pinball machine, of all things".

In allusion to the sound of "You Stole the Sun from My Heart", Marc Burrows of Drowned In Sound proclaimed it "the most straightforward rocker here" and "catchy to the point of irritating".

The lyric concerns Nicky Wire's dislike of touring. He has said that as much as he enjoys being on stage, he hates the routine of travelling, soundchecks, hotels, and the homesickness it causes. The lyric "but there's no, no real truce with my fury" is a reference to a poetry book by R. S. Thomas entitled No Truce with the Furies. The song title is namechecked in a later Manic Street Preachers single, "Your Love Alone Is Not Enough". It was included on the 2002 compilation Forever Delayed.

Music video

The video presents a dark/light contrast where the band plays in a room in front of a huge ornate feature window. Outside the weather rapidly alternates between stormy and sunny. Rabbits and animated birds also make an appearance.

Album

This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours is the fifth studio album by Welsh alternative rock band Manic Street Preachers. It was released on 14 September 1998 by record label Epic.

Like its 1996 predecessor Everything Must GoThis Is My Truth Tell Me Yours was a commercial and critical success. The album debuted at number 1 in the UK Albums Chart, selling 136,000 copies, going Gold in the first week.

It sold well in the United Kingdom, Europe and Asia, and represented a change in the sound from the furious alternative rock sound to a more melodic and tender approach. By March 1999 the album was Triple Platinum in the UK alone and since its release it has sold more than five million copies worldwide.

It earned the band further nominations and accolades at the BRIT Awards in 1999. This is their first album which the lyrics were solely written by the bassist Nicky Wire, as their previous album which some of the songs still contributed from the late rhythm guitarist Richey Edwards.

This Is My Truth Tell Me Yours è un album dei Manic Street Preachers pubblicato nel 1998.

Artist

Lyrics

Drinking water to stay thin
Or is it to purify?
I love you all the same

But there's no, no real truce with my fury
You don't have to believe me
I love you all the same

But you stole the sun from my heart
You stole the sun from my heart
Oh, you stole the sun from my heart
You stole the sun from
And you stole the sun from, ah

You have broken through my armour
And I don't have an answer, I
I love you all the same

I paint the things I want to see
But it don't come easy, I
I love you all the same

But you stole the sun from my heart
And you stole the sun from my heart
Oh, you stole the sun from my heart
You stole the sun from
You stole the sun from, ah

Think I'm, I'm lost among the undergrowth
So much so I woke up but
I love you all the same

But you stole the sun from my heart
You stole the sun from my
Oh, you stole the sun from my heart
You stole the sun from
You stole the sun from, ah

I have, I gotta stop smiling
It gives the wrong impression and I
I love you all the same

Testo
