"Glastonbury Song" is a song from Scottish-Irish folk rock band The Waterboys, released as the second single from their sixth studio album Dream Harder. It was written by Mike Scott, and produced by Scott and Bill Price. The song reached No. 29 in the UK and No. 12 in Ireland.
"Glastonbury Song" was inspired by the town in Somerset, England, and the single sleeve features a photograph of Glastonbury Tor, taken by Michael Mathias. Scott told Rolling Stone in 1993: "It's almost like a place to go on a pilgrimage, a holy, sacred place. It's inspiring to be there."
Album
Dream Harder (1993) is the sixth album by The Waterboys. Led as always by Scottish singer-songwriter-instrumentalist Mike Scott, the album features none of the earlier UK based band members and instead finds Scott backed by American session musicians.
It was the last Waterboys album before Scott spent seven years pursuing a formal solo career, with Bring 'Em All In (1995) and Still Burning (1997). The album reached position 171 on the Billboard Top 200 charts, surpassing the previous Waterboys album Room to Roam, in spite of a less-than-enthusiastic response from critics to the album's sound.
Artist
The Waterboys sono un gruppo musicale rock scozzese fondato nel 1983 da Mike Scott (Edimburgo, 14 dicembre 1959). Il nome del gruppo proviene da un verso di The Kids, canzone contenuta nell'album Berlin di Lou Reed.
Il gruppo ha attraversato vari stili musicali grazie anche al contributo dei vari artisti che hanno collaborato con Mike nei vari anni. Si è così passati dal rock dei primi anni al folk irlandese di Fisherman's Blues per poi tornare al folk rock più intimo degli ultimi tempi. Il gruppo si scioglie nel 1993 per poi riformarsi nel 2000.
